Addressing accountability starts on the front-line through Patient Access supervisors to promote higher quality, efficiency and effectiveness in their staff’s roles. As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, we need to embrace the disruption and change the denials paradigm. Denials should not be an accepted part of the healthcare revenue cycle. The focus on denials management needs to shift to denials prevention. As decisions in one area can affect other areas, there needs to be strategic alignment across the C-Suite, RCM Leaders and Managed Care. When all the key stakeholders are working in concert with each other, we have the opportunity to stop denials before they happen.

At UT Southwestern in the department of patient financial access services (PFAS), we operate in a love-based culture. We use this practice from the highest level, the AVP down to the frontline. All leadership in the PFAS department read the book titled "The 10 Principles Of A Love Based Culture," and have monthly book discussions. Many companies treat their employees as just a number, which in return, creates a fear-based culture. They lack trust, empathy, and a good working relationship with the employees they supervise. Our department focuses on hiring good people and providing them with the tools to be excellent leaders who treat their employees with respect, compassion, and understanding. We hope in the end of the webinar leaders can take away useful tools to strengthen their leadership skills, build trust with their employees, and build and retain strong teams.
